WHO ARE WE?

La Société des Quarante Hommes et Huit Chevaux is an independent, by invitation, honor organization of male and female U. S. veterans, more commonly known as the Forty & Eight.

The Forty & Eight is committed to charitable and patriotic aims. Our purpose is to uphold and defend the United States Constitution, to promote the well being of veterans and their widows, widowers and orphans, and to actively participate in selected charitable endeavors, which include programs that promote child welfare and nurse’s training.

The titles and symbols of the Forty & Eight reflect its First World War origins. Americans were transported to the battle front on French trains within boxcars stenciled with a “40/8”, denoting its capacity to hold either forty men or eight horses. This uncomfortable mode of transportation was familiar to all who fought in the trenches; a common small misery among American soldiers who thereafter found “40/8” a lighthearted symbol of the deeper service, sacrifice and unspoken horrors of war that bind all who have borne the battle.

The Forty & Eight was founded in 1920 by American veterans returning from France. Originally an arm of The American Legion, the Forty & Eight became an independent and separately incorporated veteran’s organization in 1960. Membership is by invitation of honorably discharged veterans and honorably serving members of the United States Armed Forces.

To all Voyageurs in Grand d’ Illinois,
I hope you are all in good health and ready for the big warm up next week. We will go from unseasonably cool to 90 degrees plus starting this week end. I am happy because I finally found my favorite tomato plants. I am looking forward to a bunch of lettuce, tomato cheeseburgers this summer.
Last week V-207 turned in one renewal and I didn’t put out a report. I will include it this week. This week we had 10 renewals by one Locale, V-812. That is 10 times better than last week but we still need 157 renewals to make 100%. there are 13 Locales that need 5 or less to complete their goal. All of us need to contact our unpaid members and encourage them to pay for 2025. We can do it, we just have to ask them to pay up for 2025.
I have some good news! I received a call tonight from Todd Latham about a bunch of Veterans that want to start a new Locale. They have heard about us and want to get involved. What better way to show some new Voyageurs that us “old’  gu% this year, again! we need to lead by example. Let’s git-r-dun!
I am attaching the Nationale Public Relations Directeur’s letter for you to read. We all need to brush up on public relations to get our name and Programs introduced to America. From our local news media to the 40/8er we get from Nationale. The more the better.
The Great Lakes Promenade starts a week from today, June 5th. I hope to see a lot of you there. If you like to BS, and who doesn’t, the Great Lakes Promenade is a great place to hone your skills. It is 99% social and 1% business and half of that is monkey business. If you have never been, this is as close as it will get. See you there. No reservations? I’m sure you can be worked in some way. Give it a try, you won’t regret it. V-207 has busted their proverbial behinds to put this together and we should support them.
I will remind you that it is report time. The report forms are on the Nationale website. On the Home page look under resources and scroll down to 2025 Petite Communique and there they are. Most of them can be filled out and printed off. Do not mail them to me. Mail them to the Grand Directeur and he will forward the consolidated report to the Nationale Directeur. Reports are important! Do your best to get them filed on time
I will have a flyer about the Grand Promenade next week. It will be in Annawan, IL. on August 7, 8 and 9. Mark these dates down and plan to attend.
I look forward to seeing many of you next week-end.
Stay safe and healthy.

Yours in service,

Wally Hammond (HA#1)

All, use caution when replying to unsolicited emails, especially those that are asking for electronic gift cards. These have typically been proven to be scams. They generally start out with someone supposedly out of country, or a relative in jail or other trouble, and request pre-paid gift cards. Today, one such email arrived, purportedly from our Grand Chef de Gare. It wasn’t. If it looks suspicious, it probably is. Find another way to contact the sender to check on the validity of the email, before you take any other action, don’t even reply to the email.
